Being There

I’m fresh off a fantastic month long cycling tour in Mexico, and really excited to be back as the 2010 Adventure Cycling Tours Season kicks into full gear. I had the notion during my trip that one of the best things about visiting beautiful places by bike is that I’m rewarded with a real sense of ownership: I know that I deserve to be there! I’ve paid my dues, and every climb, every rough patch of road, every bit of sweat along the way has only served to make me feel more connected to my surroundings.

One of my favorite memories of my trip is our stop in Playa Ventura, a tiny beach community just off Highway 200. It had been an extraordinarily hot day, and my weary legs were glad to take a break. The surf was spectacular and palm trees were waving softly in the warm breeze. I basked happily in both the sunshine and my own sense of accomplishment, pleased to have gotten to such a lovely place by the strength of my own legs.
